'It is true that the doctor has the inestimable back-up of psychologists and, especially, the effective, essential role of nursing in providing emotional support for the patient. But as a professional doctor they must have first-hand familiarity with the fear, bitterness, sadness and general emotions that come with illness. There is no doubt that literature is an excellent source of learning materials.'

"Un altre encant del gènere és que el metge encarna plenament la figura de l'heroi, en el sentit que la seva causa és noble i essencialment altruista, que tendeix a posar la seva feina per sobre de si mateix, sacrificant-se amb llargues jornades laborals i esforçant-se al màxim, dia i nit, per salvar la vida als pacients. Així, doncs, es converteix en una figura admirable en què el lector pot dipositar la seva confiança."

"Another attraction of the genre is that the doctor embodies the role of the hero in the sense that their cause is noble and essentially altruistic, they tend to put their work first and make sacrifices, suffering throught long shifts and stretching the limits of their endurance day and night so as to save the lives of their patients.

"Després d'un llarg període on ens hem centrat bàsicament en la profunditat del coneixement, ara retrobem la importància de l'amplitud d'aquest mateix coneixement. Quan s'escriu en relació a les històries de malalties, es necessita parlar també de les històries de les vides personals que hi ha associades a aquella malaltia. Ni l'humanisme ni la medicina poden explicar-se (o entendre's) gaire l'una sense l'altra, és per això que moltes persones pivoten entre aquestes dues maneres de descriure el seu ésser."

"After a long period when we focused primarily on depth of knowledge, we have returned to the importance of breadth of knowledge. In telling the stories of illness, we need to tell the stories of the lives within which illness is embedded. Neither humanism nor medicine can explain much without the other, and so many people ricochet between two ways of describing their very being."

"La divisió entre humanisme i ciència és recent, una idea de la Il·lustració, una dualitat cartesiana, i de la mateixa manera que moltes d'aquestes idees, al principi va servir per avançar un discurs que ara pot impedir. Ara, les dues corrents de pensament, es plantegen sovint com oposades, en lloc de com vocabularis bessons per a la mateixa realitat".


“The division between humanism and science is recent, an Enlightenment idea, a Cartesian duality, and like many such ideas, it servede at first to advance a discourse it may now impede. The two modes of thought are now too often posed as opposites rather than as twin vocabularies for the same reality”.
